Dear Colleagues,

Recognizing the rapid growth in our research programs and funding University leadership decided two years ago to acquire and implement a state-of-the-art commercial software solution to replace our home-grown system, ResearchUVA that has served us well but is limited in functionality and is difficult to maintain. We needed a system that could scale with our growth, as well as support proposal creation and submission, award management and research compliance. Following an intensive Request for Information process, the University chose Huron Grants and Agreements as the system to support our research endeavors. We are calling the new system “ResearchUVA Powered by Huron.”

Formal adoption of the system began last summer. Development and configuration are ongoing, with initial testing to begin this month and more extensive end-user testing set for March. The system will go live in April 2022.

Benefits of ResearchUVA Powered by Huron include:

  • Provides functionality that helps a study team prepare a proposal, including a robust budget development tool that can create and save multiple iterations of the budget
  • Provides transparency into the status and routing of proposals and agreements
  • Provides direct system-to-system submission of federal proposals to Grants.gov, with the ability to know in advance whether the proposal will pass all validations
  • Permits creation of interdisciplinary proposal teams who can work collaboratively on the proposal in the system
  • For the first time, substantial programmatic and fiscal data from proposals and agreements will be available in a data warehouse for various reporting needs
  • Tags can be used to identify and track proposals and awards tied to UVA’s strategic priorities, investments, and other metrics of interest

My office and the Office of Sponsored Programs have created a website where information will be posted about system changeovers, reference materials, training materials and programs, and other key elements.

We look forward to the launch of ResearchUVA Powered by Huron and are confident that the new system will help make our research enterprise at UVA stronger than ever.
