The Office of the Vice President for Research is issuing a call for nominations for the first annual University of Virginia Research and Discovery Awards. These awards aim to provide institutional acknowledgement and recognition of excellence on the part of faculty for published research, scholarship, creative expression, innovation, and sponsored research.

    All university faculty researchers are eligible for nomination by their colleagues to recognize excellent scholarship in the five thematic areas of the University’s new strategic plan. The thematic research areas include:

    • Democracy
    • Environmental Resilience & Sustainability
    • Precision Medicine
    • Brain & Neuroscience
    • Digital Technology & Society

    Award nominations will be reviewed by selection committee convened by the Office of the Vice President for Research. Winners will be announced on in January 2020, and celebrated at an award ceremony and dinner reception on Wednesday, January 29, 2020 at the Boar’s Head Pavilion.  By invitation only.

    The UVA Research and Discovery Awards will be presented to faculty recipients by the Vice President for Research and University leadership.

    • Individuals may not be nominated for multiple awards in the same year.
    • Previous recipients are not eligible to receive a second award in the same category. The list of past winners can be found on the website
    • Individuals are discouraged from self-nominating.

      Rising Star Awards

      For researchers who are assistant and associate professors and at the start (less than 10 years post terminal degree) of their research careers.

      To nominate a promising researcher for this award:

      When the application window is open, please submit an application packet, which includes the nominee, title and school, the thematic area (see above) of their research, along with a brief nomination letter (maximum two pages) detailing their accomplishments and if relevant, a sample of the research product (e.g., copy of publication, book, link to website, product developed).       We anticipate making up to five awards in this category (approximately one award per thematic research area).

      Research and Discovery Achievement Award

      For researchers with 10+ years of their terminal degree who have made a great impact on the scholarship and knowledge in their field.

      To nominate a researcher for this award:

      When the application window is open, please submit an application packet, which includes the nominee, title and school, the thematic area (see above) of their research, along with a brief nomination letter (maximum two pages) detailing their accomplishments and if relevant, a sample of the research product (e.g., copy of publication, book, link to website, product developed).       Five awards will be given in this category; one award per thematic research area.

      Outstanding University Researcher Award

      This award recognizes faculty members who are acknowledged for (a) their research nationally or internationally, (b) their quality of scholarly work, and (c) their contribution to profession/discipline.

      Public Impact Award

      This award recognizes contributions by faculty and staff from all academic disciplines. The award is to include individuals who demonstrate public impact either through public outreach or dissemination of their work or through direct public partnership and engagement with a particular community. The former includes proactively sharing research or viewpoints on research and policy issues with the public via traditional or new media channels, while the latter means working with a particular community on a community research project designed for positive impact. This award acknowledges that both efforts serve the larger mission of creating and disseminating knowledge across all disciplines for the benefit of the community, the region and the world.

      Community Research Award

      This award recognizes a University of Virginia research team whose work connects with the wider community, helps improve community relations, or improves the quality of life for community members. If you have questions, please contact Meredith Cole.

      Team Science Award

      This award recognizes contributions by a team of researchers (3 or more individual scholars) from all academic disciplines who have collectively made unique and significant contributions to research.

      Research Mentor Award

      This award recognizes faculty members who have gone above and beyond to mentor the next generation of researchers at UVA.

      Edlich-Henderson Innovator of the Year

      The highest honor bestowed on University of Virginia innovators, the Edlich-Henderson Innovator of the Year award recognizes an individual or team each year whose research discovery is making a major impact.

      Named for UVA Professor Emeritus Dr. Richard F. Edlich (1939-2013) and Christopher J. ("Goose") Henderson, a veteran of privately owned financial services businesses, the award is a tribute to their enduring support of and commitment to the University and its innovators.

      In 2012, the award title and criteria were modified to be more inclusive of University innovators pursuing a variety of different paths to achieve impact for their discoveries. Eligible nominees are current University of Virginia faculty, staff or students whose research discoveries are making a major impact. Prior to 2012, the award was known as the Edlich-Henderson Inventor of the Year award. Award winners receive a $10,000 cash prize.
