Grand Challenges Democracy

Democracy

In June 2021, the University announced a plan to invest $100 million in the study, teaching, and promotion of democracy, made possible with a $50 million gift from Martha and Bruce Karsh to establish the Karsh Institute of Democracy at UVA. The institute focuses on three interrelated pillars that shape the meaning and possibilities of democracy: democratic culture, laws and institutions, and social and economic conditions. Through innovative approaches to research, teaching, programs, and partnerships, the institute actively engages in public conversations and aims to influence the agendas that shape a thriving democratic future.

Visit the Karsh Institute of Democracy site for more information about the institute and its programs.
