How do I become an *Approved* Animal Handler at UVA?

*Approved Animal Handlers are the only personnel authorized to handle live vertebrate animals at the University.

This illustration guides you through the required steps in first becoming an Approved Animal Handler, and then moves you through the necessary steps to gain access to the Center for Comparative Medicine (CCM) animal facilities and enhance your animal handling training though optional workshops. You will receive automated email notifications from the Animal Care and Use Committee (ACUC) Office both when you are added to a protocol as an animal handler signifying when to begin the process, and again once you’ve become an Approved Animal Handler.

The Checklist for New Animal Researchers is also a helpful tool.

All required components for becoming an Approved Animal Handler are found by entering the ACUC protocol system through the Animal Handler Access portal (UVA NetBadge login is required). You must be listed on a current ACUC protocol in order to access the portal.
