Both PHS Policy and the Animal Welfare Act Regulations require that all individuals working with animals be appropriately and sufficiently trained for the procedures that they will be performing. Proper training ensures the humane treatment of animals. At UVA, the IACUC provides oversight of the training program for all animal handlers. An animal handler is not permitted to conduct animal research or order animals until all training requirements have been met. Further, an animal research protocol cannot be approved until all animal handlers listed on the protocol have completed all training requirements. The IACUC Office confirms that all training requirements have been met before a protocol is approved or an animal handler is certified to work with animals.
At UVA, the Office of Animal Welfare (OAW) administers the training program for animal handlers.
